Top Ten Books I'm Not Sure I Want to Read
This week’s Top Ten Tuesday really made me think about what books I've been avoiding, and what books I really need to get to since I already own them. I’m so indecisive when it comes to reading books because I’m a mood reader, and I always worry that it won’t be my type of book. I should just get over this and pick up books without overthinking it. I divided this week’s Top Ten list into books I don’t own but have been considering reading and books I do own but I’m unsure about reading.

Books I Don’t Own

1. Legend by Marie Lu – This is one of those books that I’ve thought about reading, but I’m not so sure. It seems to be a very popular series, but I’m not sure if it’s for me or not. Plus, I’m kind of getting tired of reading dystopian series.

2. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn – I remember liking her Dark Places, but I keep going back and forth as to whether or not I’ll read this one. I’ve read a mix of positive and negative reviews, which leaves me even more undecided.

3. On the Fence by Kasie West – This is another book I’m on the fence with (ha!). I’m not usually a big YA contemporary reader, so I have to decide if this one is for me. I’ve heard so many good things, so I’m leaning towards yes. I’m also unsure about The Distance Between Us and Pivot Point, but we’ll see.

4. What I Thought Was True by Huntley Fitzpatrick – Once again, I’m not as into YA contemporary books as I am into fantasy, but this is another book I’ve heard so many good things about. I just can’t seem to decide whether or not I’ll read this one or her debut My Life Next Door.

5. The DUFF: Designated Ugly Fat Friend by Kody Keplinger – I’ve considered reading this one before, but I’m still undecided. I haven’t read anything by this author before, and I’m not sure if I’d be a fan. I think I would like it but maybe not? Sigh.

Books I Already Own

6. Partials by Dan Wells – I actually own this book because I just couldn’t resist buying it when the Kindle edition was on sale. Now that I’ve considered this book at length, I’m not so sure I’ll like it. But I do hope to read it in the future…especially since I already own it.

7. Masque of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin – This is another book that I own but I’m unsure about. I’ve seen some negative reviews, and I’m wondering if it’s for me. But this was another Kindle deal I just had to buy. I should avoid those more often.

8. Enclave by Ann Aguire – Here’s another series I’m indecisive about even though I own this first book. I think the main reason I’m unsure is because I don’t want to start yet another series. And also I’m not sure it’s for me.

9. Entwined by Heather Dixon – The premise for this book sounds so amazing, and I love fairy tale retellings. So what’s the problem? I own the book, so why am I still unsure about reading it? I have no idea. Just me being my indecisive self again.

10. Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George – Another book I bought for my Kindle app on sale, and another book that I have yet to read. I’m still unsure about it, and I should just read it already. I’ll most likely love it since it’s a retelling of a Norwegian folk tale and also of one of my favorite childhood books, East o' The Sun, West o' The Moon by P.J. Lynch.

So that's my top ten this week. What about you guys? If you've read these books, what did you think about them? Please motivate me to read them!

  1. The DUFF was pretty good! Keplinger is one of the few YA authors out there who's very real and authentic with sexuality and being a teen. A Midsummer's Nightmare is my favorite of hers, but this one is also good.

I did enjoy the Partials series also, though it wasn't my favorite. Too many holes in logic/believability for it to be a huge hit with me. The series was, however, very well-written, with a pretty engrossing plot.

  2. I had enclave for the longest time myself and then I just felt like I might not like it, so I donated it.

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

  3. Out of the Fitzpatrick books, I liked them both, but My Life Next Door was better. I say give them both a shot eventually, but start with that one.

  4. You have some of my favorite series on your list…Enclave…loved loved loved that series!!!! And Legend!!!! You should read both of those. And also Partials…loved that series too!

Regarding On the Fence, I loved it, but I really loved The Distance Between Us. And I had issues with What I Thought Was True, but I loved My Life Next Door. So if you're choosing one from those authors, I would pick the other book.

I really liked The Duff and also Midsummer's Nightmare so either of those would be good. ~Pam

  5. I wasn't a fan of Legend, Masque, or Enclave and am considering skipping Gone Girl myself but West's latest is a light, cute read and so is Fitzpatrick's What I Thought Was True. I particularly like the latter for its diversity and the New Adult crossover appeal. The DUFF is also quite enjoyable though I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a must-read.

  6. I read about 5 contemporary books every year (or something like that, very little), but I was highly entertained by On the fence :D Partials is very good, especially if you like medical aspects. ENTWINED IS SO GOOD. It's my favorite retelling from the twelve dancing princesses.

  7. I can assure you that if you enjoyed Dark places, you'll like Gone Girl too. I've read every book Flynn has written. I didn't like Distance between us and Pivot point but I enjoyed On the Fence- cute and light read.

  8. I will say that the Legend series improved with each book. But I know the feeling of being tired of dystopias. I wouldn't have read it if I hadn't done a read-a-long with coworkers. But you can read my reviews of the series (being posted soon!) to help you decide.
I want to read Gone Girl because it feels like I should. It's just had such an influence on our culture. Maybe we can read together?
I've only read Pivot Point by West but really enjoyed it. You should start there!
And The DUFF is fantastic, I promise. READ IT!
I plan on reading Partials, but only after I finally finish Battlestar Galactica, since apparently that show inspired the author. Hopefully that happens soon!
And read the fairy-tale retellings. I'm fine reading those two together with you, since I own them as well. :)

  9. I have been contemplating reading Legend, Partials, and Enclave for a long while now. The main thing stopping me is just simply the fact that I am SO burnt out on dystopian right now. But there's also like you say, do I really want to start yet another series? I don't know. Maybe the answer would be yes if I had heard the most amazing things about any of those trilogies, but I really haven't.

As for Masque of the Red Death, I'd pass! I don't know, I really didn't take to that one. I thought I would love it because I love Poe, but I don't know... it was kind of a mess.

  10. I wasn't particularly impressed with Legend. I think I rated it 3 stars, but Prodigy was great. The finale Champion wasn't as good as Prodigy for me and the ending sort of disappointed me, but overall it's a series I would recommend.

As for Kasie West, you definitely need to read her books if you're into cute, fluffy and romantic reads. They are very much light and the perfect books to read when you're feeling down.

The Duff is one of my favorite books but I know that a lot of readers didn't enjoy it. It explores teenage sexuality very well and while the love interest was a complete douche at times, he did eventually grow on me.

I read Enclave and liked it, but for some reason, I don't feel compelled to pick it up.

I would recommend Huntley Fitzpatrick's debut instead of What I Thought Was True because the latter wasn't as good, but once again, if you like cute books that also tackle some serious issues, Huntley is a great author.

  11. I really enjoyed What I Thought Was True, though My Life Next Door was my favorite. I also liked On the Fence, but I did not care for The Distance Between Us. I liked the Legend series overall, but I feel similarly weary of dystopian. Enclave is on my radar and I don't do love triangles so Masque is off the table. I'm also curious about The Duff, but still not sure it would be for me. Good luck with the ones you pick.
